Goodbye from Dutch Habitat Platform
| As from 1 October 2007 the Dutch Habitat Platform will stop all it's activities. The platform was initiated by the Dutch Government in 1998 to support the implementation of the UN Habit Agenda. In the fall of 2006 the Dutch Government has decided to stop funding the Habitat Platform. During 2007 all on-going activities have been completed. The board and staffmembers of the Habitat Platform wish to thank all partnersorganisations and individuals who have cooperated with the Habitat Platform over the past ten years. We wish you succes in your efforts to achieve sustainable human settlements in an urbanizing world. |
Habitat Platform
The Habitat Platform supports Dutch organisations working internationally towards a sustainable living environment through exchanging knowledge and experience, providing examples of best practice, putting people and institutions in touch with one another and offering advice.
Mission
The Platform’s activities and the instruments it develops to implement them contribute to achieving the UN Millennium Development Goals, in particular improving living conditions in slum areas and increasing access to safe drinking water and good sanitation. The Habitat Platform bases its efforts on the principles set out in the UN Habitat Agenda. A good living environment makes a major contribution towards other development goals, such as health, local economic development, environmental management and local community participation.
Platform
The Habitat Platform provides a forum for organisations active across the entire habitat spectrum. Alongside information provision and raising awareness of global and domestic issues, the Platform focuses on the spread of knowledge and application of innovative instruments, principally through the:
- Habitat Platform South Africa
- Habitat Platform Central and Eastern Europe
- City-Wide Approach
- Cities for people (best practices)

Latest news
The Building and Social Housing Foundation (BSHF) is currently seeking entries for the World Habitat Awards 2007 competition, which we hope will be of interest to Habitat Platform and its partners in Europe and South Africa.
Coinciding with World Habitat Day UN-HABITAT officially opened a new office in Warsaw to serve central and eastern Europe. The Warsaw Office will support countries in the region in issues related to urban development, urban poverty and adequate shelter shortfalls.
Activities
Like every year, Habitat Platform, organised on the first Monday in October a conference on the living conditions in slums and on the worldwide urban growth. This year, we interpreted the UN-Habitat theme (Cities, magnets of hope) into our theme which is the role of money in the process of improving the living conditions in cities: ‘How rich is the city? About finance, human & other capital in cities’.
Around 100 participants from 16 African and 6 European countries attended a conference entitled Integrated City-Wide Approach for African Cities. Three partnerships between Dutch and African cities using the CWA method – Leiden and Buffalo City, Haarlem and Mutare, and Eindhoven and Gedaref – sent representatives to the conference who participated actively in the debate.
